Breadth and relevance of multivariable inquiry supports deep understanding of science practice

Engaging urban adolescents in guided inquiry and argument using a multivariable database improved their multivariable causal reasoning and understanding of scientific practice. Students better understood when contrasting causal claims conflict or work together in a multivariable system, a prerequisite for resolving diverging claims. Benefits were greater with personally relevant content spanning multiple topics.
