Why Biology

“I chose Biology in part because of my varied experiences with biology in high school. I had a great Honors Biology teacher who fostered a curiosity for the science in my freshman year. On the flip side, my junior year of high school I had an AP Biology teacher who did not meet my needs as a growing learner. It was his first time teaching AP Biology, and looking back I have empathy and understand that (1) he was still learning too, and (2) his teaching style did work for other students, just not myself. Despite a rocky experience, I still knew I wanted to study biology because of my interests, especially in ecology and evolution. Now as a teacher, I enjoy the diversity teaching biology has to offer.”

Professional Experience

During her undergraduate years, Amy taught weekly lessons on the environment to elementary school students as a Sprout Up instructor. She also facilitated a workshop focused on racism and equity at a cultural retreat hosted by Southeast Asians Furthering Education, a community program at the University of California, Davis through which she served as a mentor.

Amy will begin teaching at Leadership Public Schools in Hayward during the 2019–2020 school year.


Amy enjoys watching movies, hiking, and exploring the Bay Area in California.
