Why Mathematics

“Math is a powerful tool for social change. I believe empowering young people with this tool can disrupt and challenge a system built for only some to succeed.”

Professional Experience

Before beginning a career in education, Anna worked as a line cook and sous chef in restaurants in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. 

For four summer seasons, Anna supervised a team of 20 prep cooks in a large scale production kitchen serving over 350 people. This position included planning and supervising two weekly cooking classes with campers aged 14–16 and cooks aged 17–21. It also included designing weekly garden learning opportunities with cooks and campers. 

For five years, Anna worked as a private math tutor in the greater Bay Area. She tutored middle and high school subjects, as well as SAT/ACT Prep in one-on-one and small group settings. In this role, she also personalized lesson plans focusing on creative problem solving and conceptual understanding. 

Anna will begin her second year of teaching at John O’Connell High School during the 2020–2021 school year. 


Anna enjoys rollerblading; reading science fiction, particularly by Black women authors like Octavia Butler, NK Jemison, and Nnedi Okorafor; cooking; braising; pickling, preserving foods; and making homemade doughs, sauces, and vinegars.
