Moorestown, N.J., June 15, 2021 The Knowles Teacher Initiative announced the appointment of Dwaina Sookhoo to its Board of Trustees. Sookhoo was elected by Knowles Senior Fellows and was appointed at the May 14, 2021 trustee meeting. She is the second Senior Fellow to serve in this capacity.

Lawrence Tint, Knowles Board of Trustees Chairman, said, “She has an impressive resume that includes teaching and leadership in improving mathematics and science education. Her on-the-ground knowledge of teaching and insights about the state of education in the United States will be a tremendous resource to our Board of Trustees.”

Currently in her eighth year in the classroom, Sookhoo teaches mathematics at The Academy for Young Writers in Brooklyn, New York. Since joining the community as a Knowles Teaching Fellow in 2014, Sookhoo has served on Knowles Summer Conference book committee as a member, chair and panel moderator. She has shared her knowledge as a Knowles Summer Conference presenter and as a critical friend for Knowles Senior Fellows proposing projects designed to improve math and science teaching beyond their own classrooms. Currently, Sookhoo serves as an associate editor for the Knowles journal—Kaleidoscope: Educator Voices and Perspectives. In addition to her work with Knowles, she has presented at the annual meeting of the National Conference of Teachers of Mathematics on multiple occasions. Additionally, she was named a 2019 Hollyhock Fellow. She serves as an external communications team member for EduColor and is a Math for America Master Teacher. Sookhoo holds a Bachelor of Arts in math from Queens College and a Master of Arts in math education from Teachers College.

“I am honored to serve as a Knowles Senior Fellow Trustee,” stated Sookhoo. “I look forward to bringing my teaching experience, my passion for equity and identity work, and my unique perspective as a black woman in education to the table. Knowles has done so much for my math teaching career and I am more than ready to give back by helping to shape Knowles programs that serve math and science educators across the country.”
